After the upgrade, my system had fglrx and fglrx-core installed. I have installed and removed the drivers about 4 times at this stage but still I get the same error above even though driver seems to be install correctly.

Use this commands as root: If all is right, the fglrx driver that corresponds to AMD Catalyst No supported adapters detected I have removed and reinstalled the fglrx package about 6 times as that was suggested as a way to fix things in various bugs but that has not helped. To uninstall after installing using this method, you MUST use the amdconfig utility: When I go to the GUI-installer for proprietary software it shows that the proprietary driver is in use, but when I check out “Details” in the settings panel the overview shows that I am using the open source driver.
If you see any mention of MESA in the output, the fglrx drivers have not been installed correctly. Navigate to the directory to which the file was downloaded. You simply installed the fglrx package but didn’t enable it in any way.

I wouldn’t use older repositories, and the bit shouldn’t be required at all if you’re running aaticonfig.
